The Luckiest Block – is a mod for Minecraft. I like the concept, and the way the game balances out the elements of chance with skill. However, as a person who has never played the game, I was somewhat confused by how the game balances out luck and skill. This confusion seems to be shared by other players, even some of the pros. So, what is the “Lucky Block” you ask?
To better explain, let’s imagine a world in which everyone was simply an average human. Now we will place a block, or star, on the game map. Now every time that player, or player character, roll the dice, they place a point into the general pool of points, or “hits”. The game then calculates the chances that a player or character will get exactly the number of hits required to place that point into the pool.
Now a random event occurs, that completely changes the odds of the game. We now find ourselves in a game where the player who rolled the dice is now the new hit! How does this work? Well, let’s say that player A wishes to become the hit, so they place one more point into the general pool. Now player B, who rolled the dice, now has a chance of being the new hit.
The key to this method is the way the game tacks on the bonus hit to the end of the game. If the player had just one hit prior, they would only gain the bonus hit upon completing their turn. Therefore, they would need to roll two dice, thus gaining two points. However, since they rolled three dice and became the new hit, they gain four points towards their goal.
This is a good example, but there are many more similar examples throughout the game. In the above example, consider if you will that when a person reaches level ten in the game, they have a ninety percent chance of hitting a jackpot. But, when they reach level twenty, the chance of hitting the jackpot dramatically increases, because now they have three chances at it. This is due to the fact that, as the game progresses, the likelihood of hitting jackpots becomes increasingly remote. This means that any player at any level should learn how to develop their own lucky block.
The luckiest block is, in a sense, an emergent property of the game of Blackjack. Without the presence of the lucky block, the probability of hitting higher or lower jackpots would have remained constant. However, the lucky block has turned the odds in the players favour. Learning to manipulate the probability of a win is the basis of becoming an expert at Blackjack.
